Blackburn Bridge ready for Football World Cup

Latest BBR HiAm CONA stay cable technology installed for new landmark feature within South African landscape

Construction of the 160 m long Blackburn Pedestrian Bridge in KwaZulu Natal has just been completed prior to the start of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. This new bridge, spanning over the N2 north and southbound carriageways, is the first of its kind in KwaZulu Natal. The concrete bridge deck structure is supported by 32 BBR HiAm CONA parallel strand stay cables attached to a 60 meter high A-frame pylon in the centre of the bridge. BBR Network member Structural Systems (Africa) was awarded the contract for supply and installation of the 4 x 8 stay cables. The cables are connected to the pylon with a pin connector anchorage, the stressing end at the deck uses a nut head adjustable anchorage. All cables are protected with a multilayer system with three nested barriers.
